TO BECOME A CERTIFIED SHIP AGENT MEMBER
Did you know that the Association of Ship Brokers and Agents (ASBA) has represented agents in the U.S.A. since 1934? ASBA is a national association who, given its narrow membership focus (ship brokers and ship agents), has successfully represented member ship agents with Congressional leaders and at the headquarters level of Customs and Border Protection, US Coast Guard and Department of Homeland Security.
In 2005, ASBA Ship Agent Members approved our “Guidelines for Certification” to raise the bar for Ship Agency providers in the United States. In October of 2008, The Federation of National Associations of Ship Brokers & Agents (FONASBA) approved their “Quality Standard” which was modeled after ASBA’s Certification Guidelines. Upon successful completion of our annual certification membership agent companies are then awarded the FQS.

Criteria for Certification of ASBA Ship Agent Members
Member agents have up to 6 months to complete their certification following their conditional approval for membership. Major Owner Associations including BIMCO, INTERTANKO and INTERCARGO have endorsed the FONASBA Quality Standard (FQS) effectively recognizing that the ability to identify “quality” ship agency providers is of great value to ship owners and operators.
